About the Event

Key learnings in this Weeks Course

Module 02 Video 01:

  • A viable startup idea is generally not obviously a good idea, and often looks like it wouldn't work.
  • Avoid self-evidently good ideas, as there are likely to be lots of startups working on similar ideas.
  • Focus on solving a hair-on-fire problem for your customer. Be a must-have, not a nice-to-have.
  • Look for opportunities to disrupt slow, inefficient, old-economy businesses. Some of the best startup opportunities involve taking market share from these incumbents.
  • You could spend the next ten years of your life working on your startup, so make sure it's a big enough opportunity to be worth that effort.

Module 02 Video 02:

  • Expert Insight: Shared behaviors of successful founders (James Alexander, Galileo Ventures) James Alexander is a Co-founder and Partner at Galileo Ventures, an early stage venture fund and accelerator that invests in emerging entrepreneurs. He previously founded and ran Incubate, the University of Sydney's student accelerator, and teaches new venture creation at USyd. He has worked with over a hundred early stage startup founders and in this video shares his insights on behaviors that can help early stage founders to get their startup off to a great start.
  • Successful founders generally focus on problem discovery and deeply understanding their customer's needs before they start building a product.
  • Do things early on that are free, make use of the growing number of free and cheap tools to test your idea, and resist the temptation to throw money at anything early on.
  • Learn how to do good customer interviews and ensure you are asking questions that will increase your understanding of the customer problem, rather than seeking "positive reinforcement" that your idea is awesome.
